It brings those of us in the developed-world who are concerned about our own environmental impact into a unique partnership with communities who wish to conserve their environment and end poverty.
Envirotrade's community carbon project in the small community of Nhambita, in the buffer zone of the Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique, is breaking the mould. The thousands of trees planted and the land on which they grow, are owned by the individuals and the community participating in the project; as is 100% of the additional income from fruit, honey and cereal crops sold in the local market. The majority of the proceeds from the sale of these certificates is the individual farmer and community's to control and manage. Specific strategies to build micro industries and ensure food security are being used to change unsustainable use of scare resources. A democratically elected local community council decides how the community's co-operative tree planting and subsequent carbon revenues are spent. The Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management and the University of Edinburgh's Geo-Sciences School monitor all aspects of the project to ensure that targets for sequestration and poverty alleviation are met.
